Carnival Comes To Debrecen

In Christianity, the period from Epiphany or Three Kings Day (January 6) to the beginning of fasting on Ash Wednesday (February 26th 2020) is known as “Carnival”.  While adopted as a Christian tradition Carnival has its roots lie firmly in a pagan festival celebrating the arrival of spring. Carnival is a time of romance and couple pairing in Hungary, as is found everywhere at this time of year in nature.

In the villages, the tradition is for men organize balls, while the girls would give a posy to the selected lucky guy and if the feeling was reciprocated, he would put it on his hat as a public notice, an announcement at the end of the Carnival.  The essence of the ball season and dance was to announce engagement.

The carnival season begins with “Dalido” and in Debrecen this year the event held on February 11th will bring former traditions back to life, The former guild tradition revives: masters and apprentices will celebrate together.
