In April 2026, a new chapter began in the cultural life of the Dobozi housing estate in Debrecen, as the brand-new community terrace of the Méliusz Petőfi Memorial Library opened on April 7. The development is not merely an architectural expansion, but a much-needed meeting place that was completed in time for the library’s 50th anniversary.
The opening ceremony began with the well-known song “Fényév távolság” from the musical *Padlás*, setting the mood at the institution on Víztorony Street.
The goal was to create a community space in the heart of the housing complex that appeals to all generations. The terrace establishes a direct connection with the street front, yet remains secluded for those seeking relaxation. This space serves as a sort of “living room” where one can read or enjoy a cup of coffee peacefully amidst nature. Meanwhile, children can keep themselves occupied thanks to the wonderful layout of the space. The approximately 100-square-meter terrace features, among other things, several drawing walls, beanbag chairs, a mini stage, and various other games. This specially designed area perfectly meets the needs of the youngest guests, while adults can enjoy reading or chatting with friends under the shelter of comfortable outdoor furniture and huge parasols.
The library staff have come up with a lovely initiative: they would like the terrace to become a “green oasis,” so they gladly accept donations of balcony plants, cuttings, or seedlings from visitors. In this way, readers themselves can contribute to beautifying their surroundings.
Useful information: The Petőfi Terrace is open during the library’s hours (every day except Sunday):
-Address: 4029 Debrecen, Víztorony Street 13.
-Hours: Monday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
