New flights from Debrecen to Leipzig and Malta

The Municipality of Debrecen welcomes the announcement that Universal Air will launch two return flights a week from Debrecen International Airport on the Debrecen-Leipzig and Debrecen-Malta routes from 30 March 2025.

The new airline and the two flights they will launch will further boost leisure and business tourism in Debrecen, and will allow air traffic to resume the dynamic growth that characterized the airport’s traffic before the coronavirus pandemic.

The Debrecen Municipality is working with its partners to add more and more destinations to the Debrecen International Airport offer.

In 2024, the city had a peak year for tourism, with more than 690,000 overnight stays in Debrecen in 2024. The number of guests increased by 10 percent and the number of nights by 19 percent compared to 2023. Domestic nights accounted for 51% and foreign nights for 49%. The number of foreign guests exceeded 234,000. Tourists are attracted by the quality of the city’s services, its cultural offer, the Great Forest, the historic city centre, the outdoor aquapark at the Great Forest, the adventure and thermal baths, the Island Blue theme park for children. The success of Debrecen is due in large part to its wide range of events and programs, international sporting events such as the Olympic qualification tournaments, the European Women’s Handball Championship, the European University Games, the growing business and conference tourism and the professional work of VisitDebrecen. Tourism continues to play an important role in Debrecen’s economy, with hundreds of businesses operating in the sector and employing thousands of people.
