Déri Museum

The Déri Museum is one of Hungary’s most important museums. The institution has become significant thanks to its rich local history collection and Frigyes Déri’s universal cultural history collection.

One of the most famous pieces in the collection is Mihály Munkácsy’s monumental trilogy depicting the Passion of Christ. The permanent exhibitions include a samurai mansion, an ancient Egyptian collection, and archaeological and local history exhibitions.

In addition to exhibitions, the museum also offers educational programs. Activities for preschoolers last 45-50 minutes and are free for accompanying teachers. The programs are available from Tuesday to Friday between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., with the last start time at 2:30 p.m. One group of up to 32 people can participate in each session. Registration at least one week in advance is required to participate. The first part of the program takes place in the exhibition space, followed by crafts activities. The program includes an activity called The Magic of the East – The World of Japan, where children learn about samurai, Buddha, and origami. The program In the Footsteps of Our Ancestors presents the life of the Hungarian conquerors through archaeological finds, introducing the yurt and everyday tools. During the program Journey to the Land of the Pharaohs, children gain insight into the unique culture of Egypt, examining the pyramids and Egyptian clothing.

The square that is home to the Déri Museum is one of the most romantic squares in the city center. The four sculptures in the park, created by Ferenc Medgyessy, won the grand prize at the 1937 World’s Fair in Paris.
