6+1 Unmissable Experiences in August

Debrecen has something special in store for every day this August: a colorful carnival, gastronomic delights, nature-filled adventures, and unforgettable summer evenings await visitors. We’ve rounded up six can’t-miss events in Debrecen, plus one unforgettable day-trip idea to Hortobágy.

A Day Full of Fun at Zoo Debrecen

At Zoo Debrecen, visitors can not only meet a wide variety of unique animal species but also enjoy spectacular shows throughout the day. It’s worth planning your route before you arrive so you don’t miss out on the most exciting programs.

The Nile hippos are fed at 9:30 am, followed by the red pandas at 10:00 am. A penguin show awaits visitors at 1:45 pm, and at the end of the day, at 5:30 pm, you can watch the reticulated giraffes being fed. Throughout the day, though, there are countless other programs in store for visitors. These feeding shows offer an exciting experience for young and old alike: you can watch the animals up close, learn plenty of interesting facts about them, and even get a glimpse into the keepers’ work.

It’s worth checking the times before you set off, as they may change due to weather or other factors.

Tip: On August 7, an exciting evening walk awaits visitors at the zoo, and on August 28, the Night of the Zoos event series arrives.

Take a Sip of Summer at the Debrecen Wine and Jazz Days!

What could be cozier than a glass of chilled wine, live jazz, and a summer evening by the lake? From August 6–8, 2026, the Nagyerdő will once again fill with music and life at the Debrecen Wine and Jazz Days. Under the shady trees, you can sample selected wines from Hungary’s and national wine regions, while more than 40 jazz acts on stage create a delightful atmosphere. One special highlight of the festival is a series of masterclasses, offering in-depth, interactive wine tastings for enthusiasts. Alongside the wine and concerts, the program also includes romantic boat rides, wine-and-jazz pairings, eye-catching photo spots, a kids’ corner, and family programs.

Theater Under the Starry Sky

At the Nagyerdő Open-Air Theater, the theatrical experience is paired with nature’s unique atmosphere. Amid the trees of the Nagyerdő and beneath the starlit sky, performances come to life with a mood quite unlike that of a traditional theater hall: the evening lights, the rustling of the leaves, the lakeside setting, and the summer air all become part of the experience themselves.

In August, a diverse lineup awaits audiences. The program includes a dance performance, a large-scale gala concert, a musical production, and a musical. Highlights on stage include the Living Dance Archive: Kalotaszeg and Szatmár, László Dés’s concert We Are the Grund!, the Operetta Gala, Forever Broadway, and, at the end of the month, the musical The Paul Street Boys.

Experience the Magic of the Debrecen Flower Carnival!

Between 18. and 23. of august, Debrecen bursts into bloom: the city’s streets fill with music, dance, and colorful performances. The Debrecen Flower Carnival is more than just an event — it’s a celebration that sweeps up the entire city.

At the carnival week’s high point, on August 20, our national holiday, massive floats decorated with hundreds of thousands of flowers parade through the city, while dancers, musicians, and performers from Hungary and abroad create an inimitable festival atmosphere. The colorful evening flower-float parade is also unmissable: the art troupes marching alongside the floats, „dressed in light,” enchant carnival-goers. Over the multi-day event, music, dance, and dazzling light shows fill the streets with life every evening. On August 20, the day is rounded off with a VALMAR concert starting at 10:00 pm on Kossuth Square.

During carnival week, visitors can also enjoy free open-air concerts, the Galiba Children’s Festival, the Botanica Expo, the lakeside Beer by Lake – Nagyerdő Beer Garden, and the evening cycling parade bathed in light, the Schaeffler Night Ride. Throughout the program, you can even join in decorating a community flower float, becoming not just a spectator but an active participant in the carnival.

It’s worth spending every day of the carnival in Debrecen, since besides the stunning sight of the flower floats, a wealth of spectacular events and programs await visitors.

Stars in Debrecen

In the last days of summer, the international elite of 3×3 basketball returns to the heart of Debrecen. From August 26 to 30, the world’s best 3×3 basketball players and teams will battle it out in Debrecen. The highlight of the event series is the Debrecen stop of the FIBA 3×3 World Tour, held on August 29–30, while the women’s world competitions kick off already on August 26. The matches will take place in a truly special setting: the arena will be set up right in front of the iconic Reformed Great Church, on the main square, so the thrilling sporting action will be paired with the atmosphere of Debrecen’s historic city center.

The Legendary Debrecen Bath Ball Returns in August

On August 15, for one evening only, special lighting, live music, and a sparkling summer atmosphere will fill the pools of Aquaticum Debrecen SPA. The 2026 Bath Ball pays tribute to the 200th anniversary of Debrecen’s bathing culture, bringing the elegance of the old bath balls to life anew, adapted to today’s musical world.

The event welcomes guests across three venues, each with its own distinct atmosphere. On the outdoor main stage, the bands LK Beat and V-Tech provide danceable tunes; in the adventure pool, DJ sets and a foam party liven up the night; and by the thermal pool, soft lighting, soothing water, and acoustic guitar music offer a more relaxed way to unwind.

The Bath Ball can thus be a lively summer party, a nostalgic musical journey, and an intimate evening swim beneath the wonderful trees of the Nagyerdő, all at once.

+1 Experience: Shooting Star Watching in Hortobágy

A day trip from Debrecen to Hortobágy offers visitors a special August experience: beneath the endless sky of the puszta, the Perseid meteors light up the night. The meteor shower can be observed at several locations between August 11 and 15, 2026. Thanks to the low light pollution of the Hortobágy Starry Sky Park, the Milky Way and many other highlights of the August sky stand out especially beautifully to the naked eye. Telescope and laser shows, along with expert presentations, make the programs even more memorable.

This year’s program is further enriched by an exceptional celestial event: on August 12, a partial solar eclipse will be visible before sunset. The program kicks off at 6:00 pm with a variety of experiences for arriving visitors. Sun telescope viewing, microscopic rock examination, a meteorite petting station, educational talks, and playful science programs round out the offering.

The Máta Stud Farm’s program on August 15 also offers an adventurous experience. Participants set off into the puszta by horse-drawn carriage, and along the way may encounter the Nonius horse herd returning to its stable, see the grey cattle herd, and watch a csikós (herdsman) show at sunset. The evening continues with shooting-starwatching, as an astronomer presents the highlights of the summer sky and explains how shepherds once navigated by the stars.
