A Long Weekend in Debrecen – 3 Days, Countless Experiences

A long weekend is the perfect opportunity to get a taste of the city’s diverse attractions, discover new places, enjoy memorable experiences, and escape the everyday routine for a while. We’ve put together a three-day itinerary that combines sightseeing, gastronomy, culture, and relaxation – while leaving plenty more to discover on your next visit to Debrecen.

Day 1 – Discover Debrecen’s Historic City Centre!

Start exploring Debrecen in the heart of the city, at Kossuth Square, where one of its most iconic landmarks, the Great Reformed Church, stands proudly. It’s well worth admiring the building from the inside, too: alongside its historical treasures, the panoramic walkway connecting the two towers offers spectacular views over the city centre. Don’t miss the colourful city coat of arms embedded in the square’s pavement, created from Italian glass mosaic tiles.

From here, it’s just a short walk to the charming Déri Square. The Déri Museumis home to a wealth of fascinating collections, including the world-famous Christ Trilogy by Hungarian painter Mihály Munkácsy, making it a must-visit for art and history enthusiasts.

Next, take a stroll along Piac Street and discover Debrecen’s historic merchants’ houses, elegant palaces, charming squares, and colourful murals. It’s also worth stopping for a coffee or lunch: the city centre offers plenty of dining options, ranging from traditional Hungarian cuisine to contemporary bistro dishes.

If you’d prefer to explore Debrecen with a local guide, join a guided city walk! City-Legends, Explore Debrecen, and Debreceni Séták offer fascinating tours that reveal the city’s history through intriguing stories, urban legends, and lesser-known locations, giving you a unique insight into Debrecen, historically known as the “City of Citizens”.

If you’re visiting during Advent, the city takes on a magical atmosphere after dark. Debrecen Advent welcomes visitors with sparkling festive lights, a charming Christmas market, and a wide variety of seasonal events and activities.

Go ice skating on one of Europe’s most beautiful Advent ice rinks, explore the magical Fairytale Town with your family, and don’t miss the spectacular Ice Flower Carnival, held every November! An evening stroll through the beautifully illuminated city centre is the perfect way to end your first day.

Day 2 – Tropical Adventures at Aquaticum

Dedicate your second day to nature, relaxation, and recharging your batteries!

Just a short tram ride from the city centre on tram line 1, you’ll find the Great Forest (Nagyerdő), voted Hungary’s most beautiful forest. Its winding woodland paths, picturesque Frog Lake (Békás-tó), resident ducks, and the impressive main building of the University of Debrecen create a special atmosphere throughout the year. In winter, the Great Forest reveals its quieter, more peaceful side, making it ideal for a refreshing walk or a leisurely morning outdoors.

For lunch, excellent choices include Krúdy Restaurant, Pálma Restaurant, and the restaurant of Hotel Divinus*****Superior, all located in the pleasant surroundings of the Great Forest, or Next Bistro near the University of Debrecen.

After lunch and a relaxing stroll, head to Aquaticum Debrecen! The warm thermal pools offer the perfect escape from chilly weather, while the indoor Mediterranean Water Park brings a touch of summer with tropical plants, adventure pools, and exciting water slides.

You can round off the evening with a memorable theatre experience at the beautifully renovated Csokonai Theatre! The programme of the Csokonai National Theatre occasionally includes performances with English surtitles, making it possible for international visitors to enjoy the city’s vibrant cultural scene. Keep an eye out for special behind-the-scenes theatre tours, too. These guided visits offer a rare opportunity to explore areas normally closed to the public, including the stage, dressing rooms, orchestra pit, and even the machinery behind the revolving stage.

To finish the day, stay in the city centre, where cosy restaurants, bars, and cafés await. At Csokonai Restaurant, try one of the house specialities, the authentic Csokonai soup. If you’re in the mood for hearty Hungarian comfort food, visit Flaska Tavern, where you can warm up with stuffed cabbage served with roasted Debrecen sausage or traditional Hortobágy-style beef goulash cooked in a cauldron.

At Reskontó Restaurant, the Great Plain-style beef goulash and catfish paprikash served with sheep’s cheese dumplings are tempting choices, but be sure to save room for dessert! The Nyilas Misi cheesecake, served with salted caramel sauce, is a particularly delicious way to end the day. The dessert is named after Misi Nyilas, the sensitive and honest young student from Debrecen who is the main character of Be Faithful Unto Death (Légy jó mindhalálig), a classic Hungarian novel by the celebrated writer Zsigmond Móricz.

If you’re looking for even more things to see and do, browse the Debreceni Programok app, where you’ll find the city’s latest events and cultural programmes all in one place.

Day 3 – Culture, Hidden Gems, and Romantic Moments

Take things at a more relaxed pace on your third day and discover some of Debrecen’s lesser-known but equally fascinating attractions.

Start your morning at MODEM Centre for Modern and Contemporary Arts, one of Hungary’s leading contemporary art institutions, where temporary exhibitions and thought-provoking art projects await visitors.

Just a few minutes’ walk away stands the Reformed College of Debrecen, home to one of the city’s greatest treasures: its historic Great Library. Regarded as one of the most beautiful libraries in the world, this magnificent, centuries-old collection is a truly impressive sight. Towering bookshelves, rare historical volumes, medieval manuscripts, and early printed books create an extraordinary atmosphere, while the historic staircase leading up to the library is an attraction in its own right.

If you’re looking for something a little more romantic, stop by Vintage World in the city centre for a leisurely brunch, a delicious dessert, or a cup of coffee. Its flower-filled interior, carefully chosen decorative details, and soft French chansons create an intimate, welcoming atmosphere. With its tempting brunch dishes, homemade cakes, speciality coffees, and beautiful floral touches, Vintage World is much more than just a café – it’s a charming little retreat in the heart of Debrecen, perfect for couples.

Spend the rest of the day wandering through the city’s quieter streets, searching for Debrecen’s colourful murals, or following in the footsteps of Magda Szabó, the internationally acclaimed Hungarian author who was born in Debrecen. Her works have been translated into numerous languages, and one of her best-known novels, The Door (Az ajtó), has gained international recognition.

Of course, no trip to Debrecen would be complete without exploring its culinary scene. For an exceptional dining experience, visit IKON Restaurant, recommended by the MICHELIN Guide 2025, or choose from the city’s diverse selection of restaurants. Alongside traditional Hungarian dishes and modern cuisine, you’ll find an exciting range of international flavours, from Japanese specialities to the aromatic, spice-rich dishes of Indian cuisine.

And if you still have a little time before heading home, take one last selfie with the beautifully illuminated Great Reformed Church in the background, or, during the Advent season, enjoy a delicious hot chocolate at the Christmas market.

It’s the perfect way to round off your three-day adventure in Debrecen – and perhaps start dreaming about your next visit!
