Bucket list tips for exploring Debrecen

With May kicking off with a long weekend and summer already upon us, it’s time to start planning where and how to spend your free days. Debrecen has everything for a long weekend or a relaxing holiday. To make the experience complete, here are some bucket list tips for exploring Debrecen.

Get a bird’s eye view of downtown Debrecen! From the panoramic walkway of the Reformed Great Church and the tower of the Reformed Small Church you can enjoy a wonderful view of the historic city center.

Stroll along the main street Piac utca, admire the colorful merchant houses and downtown palaces, look for the mesmerizing murals, then relax by a cozy fountain or on one of the terraces of the Mediterranean-style Hal köz.

Fill yourself with cultural experiences! The Munkácsy trilogy at the Déri Museum, the Great Library of the Reformed College, the exhibitions at MODEM and the performances of the Csokonai Theatre are unmissable!

Take tram 1 from the historic city center to the Great Forest! On the way, get off at Simonyi út and stroll between the imposing villas and the literary sculptures of Medgyessy promenade!

Wander through the winding streets and romantic houses of the old town – Szentlászlófalva, Mesterfalva and Debrecenfalva – and soak up the atmosphere of centuries past.

Recharge your batteries with a pleasant walk or bike ride among the centuries-old trees of the Great Forest, then admire the surroundings from the lookout of the Nagyerdei Water Tower. When you’re tired, you can relax on the shores of Lake Békás with friendly wild ducks.

Take a dip in the tropical-themed Aquaticum water park or the country’s most modern outdoor aquapark, relax in the thermal baths or enjoy a pampering spa treatment!

Admire the evening lights in the Great Forest! Take a walk under the stars, admire the illuminated water tower and stadium, and in the evening have fun in the Chinnibaba KultKert, a place that evokes the summers at Lake Balaton!

Walk with penguins or feed ring-tailed lemurs in the Debrecen Zoo, then have fun in the country’s only amusement park next door!
