In order to prevent the foot-and-mouth disease virus in Hungary and to preserve the safety of the high genetic value of the livestock under the management of the Hortobágy Nonprofit Ltd., the organization of the spring events planned in the Hortobágy National Park has become uncertain.
The St. George’s Day Herd-on Festival, Handicraft Fair and World Heritage Day (26 April 2025), the National Shepherd’s Competition and Meeting (24 May 2025) and the Hortobágy Equestrian Days (6-8 June 2025) are cancelled. They are scheduled to take place in the autumn.

Due to the epidemic situation, some of the permanent programs in Hortobágy are also affected by the restriction, so the horse carriage ride is NOT AVAILABLE for an indefinite period, the Máta Stud Farm, the Hortobágy Wildlife Park and the Puszta Zoo are CLOSED for an indefinite period, and there will be NO HIKING on the Szálkahalom nature trail.
Despite the epidemic restrictions, it is still worth visiting the Hortobágy, as the Herder’s Museum, the renewed exhibitions of the Hortobágy National Park Visitor Centre, the Inn Museum, the Nine Hole Bridge, the public sculptures, the Good Pastor Ecumenical Church and the Bird Hospital can be VISITED, and the Hortobágy Inn is also open from Wednesday to Sunday.
