Hungary’s biggest birthday party, Debrecen Flower Carnival kicks off on August 14! The festival is held every year around August 20 when Hungarians celebrate the foundation of the state and awaits visitors with a week-long fiesta full of colorful programs.
There will be free concerts on the main square, dance performances of local and foreign dance ensembles on the streets, flower installations and statues all over the city, beer garden in the Great Forest Park, flower and gardening market, children’s festival in the amusement park, bike rides, running competitions, folk art and artisan fairs, and the highlight of the festival on August 20 with a spectacular carnival parade, flower cars’ exhibition, dance shows and street party.

Thanks to last year’s success, the greenest event of the Debrecen Flower Carnival, the free-to-attend BOTANICA Expo, flower, and garden exhibition and fair, will be held for the second time this year. The long-term goal of the program is to create an even more natural and sustainable Debrecen.
The BOTANICA Expo offers a colorful program of activities, including free lectures on gardening, flower, and garden care, protecting our environment, a potted plant and cactus fair, a garden market, houseplant specialties and a plant exchange point.
The event will be complemented by a photo exhibition of a selection of the most beautiful, award-winning nature photographs of Hungary You can also visit the exhibition “Virágnyelven“, an exhibition of giant flowers, courtesy of the Natural History Museum, which is enriched with educational and interactive materials and photo points.
The Kölcsey Centre becomes an inviting, cooling oasis for these few days, where visitors can enjoy the most natural program of the Flower Carnival, accompanied by catchy tunes, delicious snacks, and refreshing drinks.

The Debrecen Creative Community also awaits you with colorful programs during the carnival week! The members of the community are the shops and associations of Batthyány pedestrian street. The Halloween Street Festival, the Spring Rhyme Festival, and the Batthyány Latin dance evening can be linked to their name. And now it will be one of the new locations of the Debrecen Flower Carnival programs, where the youngest of the dance schools can parade along the entire street. Let this afternoon be about both the kids and the parents.
