Every year on the Saturday of Pentecost, the National Herders’ Competition and Shepherd’ Meeting is held in Hortobágy, for the 28th time this year, on 28 May 2024 in the Puszta Animal Park. The event will bring herders from all over Hungary to show off their skills to the public on Saturday, after the qualifying rounds on Friday.
The main competitions, which will be based on tasks they face in their everyday work, will include beef gutting, water pulling, throwing a pan, using a goulash stick and a hoop whip. The inevitable final chord of the two-day competition is the joint whipping of the participants and the audience.
The good atmosphere of the event is set by pleasant folk music, which also provides visitors with a great program of active entertainment in the form of a dance house.
During the event, the public will also have the opportunity to taste traditional shepherd’s dishes and go shopping at the folk-art fair in the Pusztai Animal Park, 1.5 km from the Nine Hole Bridge. Visitors will also be able to see a variety of old Hungarian animal species while walking through the typical lowland livestock buildings.
