St Michael May Day Fair – 2022

This spring fair in Debrecen is the largest Flea Market in Hungary. Hundreds of traders come and sell their products in the streets around Böszörményi Road, next to the Agricultural University campus. The road, which is one of the busiest in the city, will be closed for two days, between Saturday 14th May and Sunday 15th May between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.

You can find high-quality textiles, pottery, hand-carved, and custom-made products at the fair. Don’t miss the tasting of jams, honey, and other products from small producers, including small-scale cheeses, strudel, oven-baked bread, and grilled sausages, as well as the high-quality Hungarian wines, brandy, and craft beers.

The fair often has household items you often can’t find anywhere else in the city, so it’s well worth stopping by to browse. It inevitably becomes a lunchtime destination, with the many street food options available.

The fair was smaller and noticeably quieter during the last two years of COVID, however, with the relaxation of the rules, this year is bound to be busy, so we recommend visiting early. The saying the early bird catches the worm certainly applies to this fair!

If visiting on Sunday, then when you’ve had enough of the hustle and bustle of this huge market, or if you are just looking for a more relaxed atmosphere, why not visit the water tower (Viztorony) in the Great Park for a coffee and peruse the latest craft fair of Csak Design, held in the garden surrounding the tower between 11 a.m and 6 p.m.
