Álmosd

Álmosd is located less than half an hour’s drive from Debrecen and is known as the site of the victorious battle of the war of independence led by István Bocskai. The memory of the victorious battle of October 15, 1604 is preserved by a monumental memorial on the outskirts of the village, on the site of the former battle. The eight-meter-high main block of the sculpture by Lajos Győrfi depicts István Bocskai on horseback, surrounded by stones depicting scenes from the battle.

In addition to the monument to the Battle of Álmosd, Álmosd boasts numerous other attractions. Among these, the Kölcsey mansion, which was the residence of Ferenc Kölcsey’s parents, stands out. The author of the Hungarian national anthem lived here until the age of six and often returned to the family estate later in life.

It is also worth visiting the former workshop of master blacksmith Mihály Mucsi, which was the last working workshop in the village. The master continued to work here in the 1960s and 1970s, making and repairing various tools, as well as ironing carts and shoeing horses. The workshop displays tools and workpieces related to these activities.

Álmosd’s other exhibition venues are the Post-Mail-Art Museum and the Joseph Kádár Collection. Both exhibitions opened thanks to Joseph Kadar, a painter of Hungarian origin living in Paris, who in 2002 donated a small part of his private collection, paintings and photographs to the town in memory of his maternal grandparents, who lived in Álmosd.

Other sights in Álmosd: the statue of the “Nameless Hajdú”, the World War I and II memorials, the Mayor’s Office, the Bay family mansion, Miskolczy Park and mansion, and the Catholic and Reformed churches.
