One of the finest repertory theaters in the country and the oldest theater in Debrecen. It opened its gates in 1865, and so celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2015.
Theater life in Debrecen flourished between the years of 1847 and 1857 which led to the establishment of the permanent theater. The theater was designed by Antal Skalnitzky heavily influenced by existing examples in France and England.
The façade of the Romantic-style building is decorated with statues of the muses of tragedy and dance as well as those of Hungarian literary greats.
The theater is richly decorated internally with the internal slim columns brightly colored in red and gold.
