Surrounded by a well-kept park, walking paths, and rest areas, the lake is an ideal place for family walks, jogging, cycling, or simply enjoying the tranquility of nature.
Benches and small rest areas await those who want to stop for a moment, listen to the sound of the water and the birds singing.

The lake was created in 1932, at the same time as the Nagyerdei Beach was built. Before 2014, the lake looked completely different, as it had undergone renovation. In fact, there was another lake next to the beach, where the thermal baths are located today. The current thermal baths have been operating since 1984. The lake was home to many different species of wildlife, and there was even a small island in the middle where a well was said to have operated.

Lake Békás boasts a rich wildlife: fish and amphibians live in the water, while the vegetation along the shore is home to numerous bird species. This summer, a pair of gray herons also chose this magical place as their home.

In spring and summer, the area around the lake is particularly colorful and lively, while autumn offers walkers a picturesque view of the golden foliage of the trees lining the lake. However, Lake Békás is not only a natural treasure, but also an important community space. Events organized here, such as the Debrecen Wine and Jazz Days, the Debrecziner Gourmet Festival, the Zamat Festival, and Beer by Lake, make the place even more attractive to city residents. The lake thus serves as a place for relaxation, recreation, and leisure, contributing to Debrecen’s green image and the quality of urban life.

Beyond the festivals, the Nagyerdei Open-Air Theater welcomes theater lovers throughout the summer with a variety of performances. This venue has become an integral part of Debrecen’s cultural life.
