One of the nation’s five research universities, UD is the higher educational institution with the longest continuous history in Hungary, celebrating its centenary in 2012.
Today the University is one of the biggest in Hungary with 30,000 students, of which over 4000 are foreign students.
Although the main building is grand and impressive today, it must have been even more so back when it was completed in 1932, at the time it was the largest building in the country.
The glass-ceilinged cour d’honneur of the main edifice, built in Eclectic and Neo-Baroque style, is skirted by an arcaded corridor system, whose walls are inscribed with the names of the school’s most renowned professors and former students. In front of the building, there is a spacious French-style park in which there is a fountain with a special role in student tradition: graduates are supposed to take a plunge in its pool after their finals.
