Carnival Week in Debrecen Featuring Light Paintings + Concerts

The Debrecen Flower Carnival program will be enriched with light exhibitions, light games, and a children’s festival. Visitors will be able to see King St. Stephen walking into Dósa Nádor Square.

In recent years, as a result of cultural collaborations, the Night of Lights and the Night of the Classics have become the two popular events of the Flower Carnival in Debrecen. The Nights of Lights and the Night of the Classics have been an integral part of the carnival week for years and will continue to be so this year.

Internationally renowned artists will present their light artworks and the compositions from the artists of the Lighthouse Light Art Association will be shown in an unusual place, in the interiors of the Csokonai Theater and the city centre as well as other outdoor places.

The exciting contemporary visual art project, “The light art exhibition”, will move into the spaces of the building, which will reveal the beauty and the soul of the theater.

There will be installations at ten different locations inside the building that will “show the space to the audience by transcendence”. 14 light installations will be placed in the halls of the theater and on the main stage, with which “the reflections and reflections of today” will be presented to the audience.

The Lighthouse ON light exhibition will open at the Csokonai Theater from 18th August (5 PM) until August 23rd. There will be guided tours every hour between 5 and 10 PM with a maximum of 50 people. The use of a face mask is mandatory and the final tour will start at 9 PM.

Special light paintings can be seen at the Dósa Nádor Square in the city centre. The facades will be shaped into an abstract image. The statue of St. Stephen will be inaugurated here on August 20th. Stephen I of Hungary,  the founder of the state, will appear in animation, and will walk on one of the facades.

The formerly “colored” courtyard will reopen at the Old Town Hall. There will be smaller musical performances from 8 PM to 10 PM from 15th to 22nd August, and light painting from 19th to 23rd August.

On the Night of the Classics, the Kodály Philharmonic Debrecen will perform the symphony of Beethoven IX. but participants can enjoy several smaller concerts during the flower carnival week.

The Passion of Csíksomlyó will be performed by the National Theater on August 23rd at Kossuth Square as the closing event of the carnival week.
