Debrecen hosts the first Zoltán Kodály International Music Competition

One of the region’s most prestigious international music events, the first Zoltán Kodály International Music Competition, will kick off on Friday 17th June, with 38 competitors from 19 nations competing in front of a jury and audience.

The first Zoltán Kodály Zoltán International Music Competition has attracted a record number of international entries, with a record number of foreign participants. The event will take place in Debrecen from 17th-26th June, with all rounds free of charge. The international jury will be chaired by a living legend of the Hungarian violin school, Professor at the Royal Academy of Music in London, which garners its members, from the world’s most prestigious educational institutions.

Exactly 200 video entries were received for the preliminary rounds, exceeding all expectations, and 38 competitors from 19 nations – 21 violinists, 7 violists, and 10 cellists – will compete in the live rounds in Debrecen, with eight from Hungary. Representatives of all three instruments will compete in a single category, with the jury selecting up to 18 competitors for the semi-finals and six for the final – at least one from each instrument.

The international jury for the €45,000 competition will be chaired by a legend in his own right, George Pauk, 85, Professor at the Royal Academy of Music in London, and will be surrounded by teachers from some of the world’s most prestigious institutions: Kristóf Baráti (violin, Budapest), Vladimír Bukač (viola, Prague), Anne Shih (violin, Mainz), Denis Severin (cello, Geneva, Bern), Wilfried Strehle (viola, Berlin), Máté Szűcs (viola, Geneva), István Várdai (cello, Vienna), and the Kodály Philharmonia Debrecen, represented by Dániel Somogyi-Tóth, Music Director and Imre Kollár, Principal Conductor.

The opening concert of the competition will take place on 17th June at 7 p.m. in the University of Debrecen’s Assembly Hall, while the Gala Concert, which will include the award ceremony and the best competitors, will be held on 26th June at 7 p.m. in the Kölcsey Centre in Debrecen. In the first round (18th-20th June) the contestants will perform solo, and in the second round (21st-22nd June) with piano accompaniment or duo. In the orchestral finals (24th-25th June), the contestants will each perform a concerto as soloists of the Kodály Philharmonic Orchestra. All rounds of the competition are free to attend and can be streamed live on the competition website.

The competition is organised by the Kodály Philharmonia Debrecen and Papageno, and its professional partner is Jeunesses Musicales International, the world’s largest youth music organisation.
