Debrecen’s newest mural has been completed and will now decorate the courtyard of the Rickl House at 39 Piac Street. The artwork was unveiled by Deputy Mayor of Debrecen István Puskás Puskás, Director of the Déri Museum János Angi, and historian Katalin Váradi on the 12th of September 2023.
The 90 square metre fresco depicts a postcard from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, showing the main street of the former Debrecen. István Puskás said the aim of the mural is to show the history of a building in the centre of Debrecen that played an important role in the life of the city and to strengthen the sense of belonging to the community. He stressed that the artwork is the result of a model collaboration between the Déri Museum, the Méliusz Juhász Péter Méliusz Library, Cívis Ház Zrt., a private company and students of the Medgyesi High School.
János Angi said that they want to show the many values of the history, past and culture of the city through material culture, and Katalin Váradi emphasised that they can give a follow-up not only to the exhibition “The World of the Cívisek” opened in the summer but also to the museum’s blog on the history of the city. In connection with the mural and the exhibition “The World of the Cívisek”, the Déri Museum is offering a tableau exhibition that tells the story of the Rickl House and Trading House, the shop “To the Turkish Emperor”, which was a key point of Debrecen for almost 130 years. The shop is now a popular, cosy café, Wellington & Pie, which evokes the spirit of the former shop with its décor – and now the exhibition.
In Debrecen, visitors to the city can now also see three murals. The 460th anniversary of the founding of the Debrecen printing house. The mural – depicting the front page of István Werbőczy’s Triple Code of 1565 – has been decorating the wall of the Bethlen Gábor Economic Technical College of the Debrecen Vocational Training Centre since June 2021, while the mural of Ákos László’s graphic artist The Artist and the City has been on the firewall of the house at 28 Piac Street since July 2023.
