The museums and exhibition centres in Debrecen are preparing for the Night of Museums with coordinated programmes this year.
The representatives of the institutions presented their programmes on 23rd May 2023 at MODEM. Deputy Mayor of Debrecen István Puskás said that the Night of the Museums is always about exhibitions and exciting programmes. Katalin Vizi, Executive Director of MODEM and the Deputy Mayor, announced that the institution had joined the network of museums and that its collection is now a public collection.
Lajos Lakner, Deputy Director of Science at the Déri Museum, said that the exhibition, entitled “The World of the Cívis”, seeks to answer the question of who the Cívis (locals) were, what mentality characterised them, and how they lived their lives over the centuries. Speaking about the programmes, he said that both young and old are expected to visit Déri Square. There will also be an invisible exhibition, and blind guides will show visitors around the courtyard of the Medgyessy Museum. Visitors can try a fire jump in the House of Literature.
István Oláh, the pastor of the Reformed parish of the Reformed Great Church of Debrecen, pointed out that on the 24th of June, visitors will be offered guided tours, and a selection of the best astrophotographs of 2022 will be on display under the title “Constellations”. In connection with this, he pointed out that the Vega Astronomical Association will present a telescope demonstration on the panoramic walkway, and the church’s cantor will be playing all 4,258 pipes on one of Hungary’s best organs in the evening. The audience will be able to see a concert of film music and a light projection on the organ.
Dávid Csorba, the director of the Museum of the Reformed College of Debrecen, said visitors could see a presentation of Debrecen’s history in addition to the fair. The programme will also include an admission rehearsal, which will preserve the symbolic tradition of the college. Visitors can see the performance of “Mattie the Goose-boy” (Lúdas Matyi), a Hungarian epic poem written by Mihály Fazekas.
Gábor Kleiser, the programme organiser of the Jewish Community of Debrecen, stressed that this year they are expecting the public at 26 Bajcsy-Zsilinszky Street- Among other things, visitors can enjoy old Jewish melodies and will also be able to get an insight into the life of a rabbi. For religious reasons, visitors are welcome from 10 p.m.
Katalin Vizi, Executive Director of MODEM, said that they try to appeal to all five senses: food, drink, movement, music, performances and a lot of intellectual content. Two exhibitions, “Re:Re Artistic re-enactments, the art of re-enactment” and the “Life work of Károly Keserű”, will be on show during the evening. There will also be talks with film directors and actors about re-enactment and re-making and screenings of turn-of-the-century black and white films.

The wristband can be purchased online or on the spot. The wristband entitles the holder to visit the exhibitions of all the participating organisations.
Open-air venues:
The Bocskai Brigade is preparing a special exhibition at the Sesztina Gallery. The exhibition will be preceded by a traditional performance by the Local Guard Band.
The Déri Museum is preparing an open-air programme for the week before the Night of Museums, in Déri Square.
