Pentecost is one of the most important Christian holidays, associated with numerous Hungarian folk customs and traditions that have symbolized community solidarity and the renewal of spring for centuries. During the long weekend, we have the opportunity to relax for another day or enjoy the spring sunshine and the company of our loved ones through active recreation. In this article, we’ve compiled a few activity ideas for those who haven’t yet decided how to spend their well-deserved free time over the long weekend.
A Cultural Treat
The temporary exhibition Memories of Millennium Debrecen will only be on view at the Déri Museum for another month, so it’s definitely worth taking the time to stroll through the exhibition this long weekend. The exhibition offers a fascinating perspective on how Hungary—and Debrecen within it—developed economically, culturally, and in terms of urban planning in the decades following the Compromise of 1867, leading up to the 1896 millennium celebrations.
Csaba Nemes’s new exhibition at Modem, titled The Continuous Past, undertakes the most comprehensive presentation to date of the artist’s work spanning half a decade. A defining feature of Csaba Nemes’s art is his critical reflection on the social, political, and cultural processes of the present moment, and his search for the corresponding contemporary artistic form: in addition to painting, drawing, and photography as his primary media, he employs a wide variety of tools, creating works ranging from animated films and linocuts to official contracts and Lego sculptures. Meanwhile, Modem is wowing art enthusiasts with several exciting current exhibitions, including an exhibition by Zsófi Antalka, who creates works from beads, and an exhibition showcasing Dalí’s fashion visions—both of which are definitely worth experiencing.

Outdoor Activities
Thanks to the great weather, we don’t have to limit ourselves to indoor activities this weekend. Hop on a bike and explore Debrecen’s green spaces, which are in full bloom and just waiting to be admired. Don’t worry if you don’t have a bike handy: at the Tourinform office in Debrecen, you can rent electric scooters, e-bikes, and traditional bicycles.
Head to the highlights of Nagyerdő and spend an unforgettable afternoon at the Debrecen Zoo! The spectacular enclosures, exotic animals, and cute little red pandas are sure to make your day here memorable. And for a little extra fun, visit the Szigetkék themed playground, where the characters and settings from Magda Szabó’s fairy tale come to life.

Cozy music, excellent drinks and food, and great company
For those who love the rooftop vibe, D-Skybar is open all weekend, where DJ Tokai will kick off Saturday night with lounge and deep house beats. The bar offers regular weekly events for carefree fun: Sky Happy Hour every Thursday from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM, and on Saturdays, Sky Siesta & Daytime Party from 4:00 PM to 11:00 PM are on the event calendar, but throughout the month, they’re preparing a grill terrace, cocktail happy hour, and special tastings for those who want to leave the weekday worries behind for a laid-back evening.
In the heart of Nagyerdő, the Csinibaba Kultkert remains one of the season’s liveliest hangouts: plus, they’re celebrating their first birthday over the Pentecost weekend! It’s hard to believe that this one-of-a-kind entertainment spot has been gracing the city for a whole year already. They’re hosting a Birthday Party Garden from May 21 to 24, featuring performances by Anna & the Barbies, the Hobo Bill Band, and József Kalapács. In addition, on Saturday, May 23, the Csini Market will return to Medgyessy Promenade with great finds. Throughout the weekend, Kultkert’s resident DJ team will, of course, keep the vibe going as part of the Tiszta Udvar Rendes House project.

Located next to the spacious, French-style park in front of the university’s main building, Next Bistro is preparing a lineup of seasonal specialties for the Pentecost weekend: the chef’s spring menu features gourmet dishes made with fresh Hungarian ingredients, Scottish salmon, and special steak dishes, and on Friday and Saturday evenings, they’ll be welcoming diners and cocktail enthusiasts with extended hours.
