Hortobágy, Hungary oldest and biggest national park awaits visitors with a unique event at the weekend of 22-23 February 2025. The family weekend offers visitors the opportunity to have a look at the youngest newcomers to the winter Hortobágy – this year’s foals, racka lambs, mangalica piglets, as well as sunny chicks, small ducks and geese, goat goats – on tours guided by the shepherds and animal keepers who look after the animals.

Did you know that in many parts of the world there is a tradition of chasing away winter and the bad spirits, and inviting and letting in the light and spring?

The Chinese Lantern Festival is traditionally held in February to mark the end of the Chinese New Year, so it coincides with the carnival celebrated at the same time in Hungary.

In February 2015, the Agora Science Center opened its doors to the public with the aim of promoting science in a playful and accessible way. With its unique interactive games, spectacular experimental demonstrations, educational and planetarium programs, Agora has since become unique in the Eastern region.

According to the Israeli airline, the first flight between Tel Aviv and Debrecen will start on 24 April. The flights will operate twice a week, on Mondays and Thursdays, according to the announcement.

On the occasion of the Hungarian Culture Day, Hungary’s first rural zoo and botanical garden and only classic amusement park is pleased to announce its renewed calendar of events for 2025. On 22 January, we celebrate the Day of Hungarian Culture, in memory of the fact that, according to a manuscript, Ferenc Kölcsey wrote the final text of the Hymn on 22 January 1823. This day is an annual celebration of the rich heritage, traditions, material and spiritual values of Hungarian culture.

Every year since 2015, the City of Debrecen and the wine and gastronomy magazine “Debrecen Borozó” have been selecting wines that are worthy of receiving the Debrecen City Wine award in 7 categories. These noble wines can proudly wear the award for a year and represent the wine culture of the Carpathian Basin in a worthy manner.

The prestigious award was won by the historic building, which has undergone complete reconstruction in recent years, in the category of Monument Restoration and Building Rehabilitation.

The first month of the year is not the most pleasant time for many people, with the holidays over, the return to the grey weekdays and the weather not so friendly. We’ve just entered the new year, but it’s already time to start planning where to go and what to do this year. In 2025, Debrecen will continue to offer exciting experiences and diverse programs for those who want to spend their free time in a meaningful way. In addition to the regular big events such as the Campus Festival or the Debrecen Flower Carnival, there will of course be new events this year too. The Junior Figure Skating and Ice Dancing World Championships will be held on 25 February, 29 March mark the 4th Made in Debrecen Festival, and the 100-member Gypsy Orchestra is also coming on 5 April. But this is just the beginning!

Shortcutz Amsterdam, organised by the BuSho International Short Film Festival, will be held again this year, where interested parties can watch selected Dutch short films and vote for their favorite, as well as award the most popular short film with an audience award.

In the cold, grey January, there’s nothing better than a big family swim or a thermal bath with friends. Csokonai National Theatre, located at 10 Kossuth Street in a beautiful historic building constructed between 1861-65, is the oldest and largest theatre in Debrecen. The company offers a wide range of genres from musicals to comedies, from absurd dramas to operas. Theater lovers now can enjoy the performances with English subtitles.

The classical music scene in Debrecen continues unabated in January. The Kodály Philharmonic Orchestra, the Kodály Choir Debrecen and the National Philharmonic Orchestra will perform works by such great composers as Mozart, Puccini, Saint-Saëns and Bizet. In addition to classical music concerts, the SONUS percussion ensemble will evoke the carnival atmosphere on 19 January.
