Half an hour’s drive from Debrecen, Hortobágy is the first and largest national park in Hungary. In the most impressive grassy wilderness of Central Europe, the endless horizon, the peacefully grazing herds of animals, the diverse birdlife and, last but not least, the shepherding traditions still alive today offer a unique experience. The natural and cultural heritage of Hortobágy is displayed in a visitors’ center, from where tourists can set off on adventurous journeys of discovery either on foot or riding horse-drawn carriages, or even by boarding a jeep. Further exquisite experiences include watching the most spectacular natural event of the autumn sunsets, the crane migration, the ritual driving of cattle into and out of their barns and the related festivities, and the long-established Hortobágy Horseback Riding Days.
