Campus Festival Update

With nine live music stages and six other music and dance venues, the Campus Festival, the most comfortable summer festival in Hungary, is the largest of its kind east of the Danube, offering a diverse programme of light music, cultural and artistic activities, leisure activities and experiences.

In 2021, during the epidemic, the organisers had about 3 months to put on the biggest music and cultural event in Eastern Hungary – and in light of this, the fact that the festival, which only featured Hungarian artists, attracted 87,000 visitors in four days was a resounding success. This year, the Campus is stepping up a gear, with international acts returning to the Debrecen festival.

“Dutch star DJ Tiësto is sure to put together one of the most memorable sets in the festival’s history, featuring EDM, progressive house and trance.” – said programme director András Süli. “We have also known since the autumn that the Norwegian singer AURORA, with her unique voice and personality, will be performing in Debrecen, her career having been boosted in recent years by the well-known theme song from Ice Magic and the unexpected ticktock craze. They are joined by newcomers Zara Larsson of Sweden as Friday’s headliners – the pop diva’s biggest hit Lush Life has well over 1 billion listens – and the UK duo Chase & Status, who are exploding in Hungary, and who weave together songs from the worlds of drum N bass, dubstep, and bass-rich electronica, which have been headlining several major European festivals in recent years.”

Another new addition to the line-up will be the British artist Sigala, aka Bruce Fielder, who will be producing a series of dancefloor-rocking songs in collaboration with the likes of John Newman, Craig David and Paloma Faith. Also from the British Isles, but from a completely different scene, comes The Toy Dolls, a band formed in 1979 and a punk-rock legend in their own right.

“As well as the big names, there will be no shortage of real musical delights.” – said András Süli. Germany’s Christian Löffler is one of the most exciting contemporary figures on the electronic scene, whose film music is both inviting and sombre. We’ll have the Australian hardcore-punk scene’s cult club band Deez Nuts, one of the most exciting European discoveries of recent years in the form of the awe-inspiringly suggestive English soul-pop singer-songwriter Charlotte OC, and the nine-piece Dutch brigade Jungle By Night, who create a frenetic jazz-funk-dance frenzy at every show.

Of course, the festival will also host more than 200 Hungarian artists this year – it’s hard to find a style or musical subculture that isn’t represented in some form in the programme. The campus festival is the only major festival that has a dedicated stage for rock music and, in addition to the aforementioned foreign names, it hosts more than 30 prominent Hungarian rock/punk/metal artists. The line-up includes not only the most popular bands, which attract crowds of thousands but also up-and-coming talent. In response to the needs of the newest generation, hip hop, rap, and trap will have their own stage this year, and a new venue for underground electronic music will be launched in the trees of the Great Forest, in a very special atmosphere, in collaboration with the locally renowned Forest Bump.

A detailed daily programme breakdown will be available from 30th March 2022 on the festival website and social media pages.
