A true instrumental rarity is coming to Debrecen as part of the Con Spirito Church Music Festival.
This year, the Con Spirito Church Music Festival will take place between 19 and 26 May, offering a fantastic program of events for the music-loving public. The name of the festival, “Con Spirito” – meaning “with spirit” – refers not only to the way the music is performed, but also to the spirituality of the religion, which, through the inner love of the community, fills and enchants the days of Pentecost year after year, alongside the festival’s prestigious and outstanding concerts.

Debrecen, known for centuries as a city of fairs, still preserves and cherishes the memory of the old fairs. Twice a year, around Mihály Day, a national fair is held in the city, with hundreds of vendors offering their wares. The spring fair will be held on 11-12 May in and around Böszörményi Street. The range of goods on offer will be as varied as ever, from clothes to technical goods, but of course there will also be traditional handicrafts and food specialities.

Exhibitions, guided tours, workshops, and studio visits will celebrate local fine art, photography and visual art education in Debrecen, in parallel and in line with the 33rd Debrecen Spring Art Fair, from 9 to 12 May. The details of the initiative, which is a collaboration between the Debrecen municipality, art exhibition venues, associations, art schools and private individuals, were presented at a press conference at MODEM on Monday, 15 April 2024.

This year we commemorate the 175th anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution and War of Independence of 1848/49. The year 1849 was of great importance for Debrecen, as the dethronement of the Habsburg dynasty, the final drafting and proclamation of the Declaration of Independence, the election of Kossuth as Governor are all historical events with a Debrecen connection.

Folklore has always linked the beginning of spring to George’s Day on 24 April: depending on the weather and the condition of the pastures, this is the time when livestock were driven from their winter shelters to summer pastures and the shepherds were hired. Although in recent years nature seems to have defied this centuries-old rhythm, in one of Hungary’s most traditional regions, the Hortobágy, with its rich pastoral tradition, this year is no different.
