The first weekend in December will see the city once again full of activities. This weekend’s the Debrecen Advent program series will of course feature Santa Claus, who will arrive on a horse-drawn carriage to meet the children at the Advent Cottage on Kossuth Square, but there will also be dance performances, street theater and open-air concerts. On the first Sunday of Advent, the shepherds of Hortobágy will come to Debrecen to keep the tradition of the Pastoral Advent at the oldest church in the city, and in the afternoon, after the traditional procession of singers, there will be a joint candle-lighting in front of the Reformed Church.

Traditionally, the shepherds of Hortobágy celebrated the beginning of the church year in the oldest church of Debrecen, and lit the Advent candle with a flame from the shepherd’s fire. The Reformed Parish of Debrecen Kistemplomi-Ispotály would like to revive this old tradition from the 19th century.
