The village of Sarud is a favourite spot for lovers of water sports, exercise, and nature, located on the shores of Lake Tisza, just an hour’s drive from Debrecen. The waterfront provides lots of activities, experiences, and the silence of nature (on quiet days). It is also a stone’s throw from Hortobágy National Park. The village positions itself as the Active and Ecotourism Centre of Lake Tisza.
Recently, much has been done to promote Lake Tisza and Sarud as a centre of sailing and significant investments have been made to improve the area for tourists. There is also a cycle path around the entire lake.
Hortobágy lies between Debrecen and Lake Tisza, with Sarud located on the far side of the lake. It is a world heritage site, of natural wonder and wild wilderness with endless grasslands and blue skies. It is also a fantastic site for nature.
Saturday 21st of May provides an opportunity to visit either Hortobágy or/and then Sarud with managed programs in the morning at Hortobágy and then later at Sarud. The event details are below.

Cycling along Meadows and Lakes – E-bike tour at Hortobágy-Halaston
On Saturday the 21st May a ebike tour starts from the Visitor Centre of the Hortobágy National Park at 9:00 a.m., then we take a tarmac road through the village, and then a crushed stone road beyond the railway to the Hortobágyi fishpond, where we cross a wooden bridge to the fishpond dam. Once on the central dam, we cycle north past habitat restoration areas managed for buffalo most of the year to the final fork. We pass two birdwatching towers on the way and then view the largest fishpond and surrounding landscape from the condas pond’s cottages and the huge observation tower. Along the way, you can observe the typical nesting birds and other creatures of the ponds, and with a bit of luck, you might even see the highly protected eagle owl or batla.
Afterwards, we cycle back to the visitor centre along the same route.

Please arrive 15 minutes before the start of the tour!
Free parking is available in the courtyard of the HNP Visitor Centre during the tour.
Registration for the tour is valid upon payment of the participation fee. You can pay the tour fee by advance payment or by SZÉP card.
Tours are available for a minimum of 4 people and a maximum of 10 people.
Pre-registration for the tour is required, which can be done using the google form, at least 2 working days before the tour.
SATURDAY @ 2 P.M.
On the 21st May, sailors will gather for the 7th time in the Sarudi basin of Lake Tisza to proclaim to the country and the world that there is sailing life in Hungary beyond Lake Balaton, and that the country’s new sailing centre is developing Sarud.
It is also the sailing season opener.
Participation fee with lunch is 5.000 HUF/person.
