FORR-A-DALOM – Remembrance of the Heroes of 1848-49

In his half-hour compilation FORR-A-DALOM – Memory of the Heroes of 1848-49, directed by Vilmos Hercz, the artistic director of the Debrecen Folk Ensemble, he refers to this heated atmosphere and evokes the national renewal movement of the Hungarian Romantic era in terms of music and dance.

In the historical spaces of Debrecen we can see the symbolic performances of the Debrecen Hajdú Dance Ensemble, the Hortobágy Folk Dance Ensemble of the University of Debrecen, the Debrecen Folk Dance Ensemble and the Phoenix Folk Dance Ensemble to the music of the Bürkös Orchestra. The jumping, marching pair dances and the solo men’s dances formed from the former military dances live and shine in the spring sunshine thanks to the spectacular camera movement, the heart-pounding atmosphere evoking the war of independence captivates the viewer.

However, Vilmos Hercz, the Young Master of Folk Art, is not satisfied with that. In the short film, he connects our national memory, our proud self-consciousness, with a hussaric cut to the people of today. In an imaginative and creative way, Bernadett Benedek, Zalán Bakota and Tibor Somogyi, young slammers from Debrecen, connect the dancing parts as a modern-day narrator. The poems, written exclusively for this occasion, touch on many life-threatening themes, so the “white workers” who fight the epidemic every day are mentioned as real heroes:

Nearly 200 years have passed and we still remember! Although the heroes are still here among us.

A nation, a people. And the heat, even now it burns. The common problem does not tear apart when cohesion and perseverance come to the fore. Workers in white, in uniform, walking in front of us every day. They are expected to go home in the same way, who are caring for a patient sweating blood, or are making food at 50 degrees. Theirs also play an important role and otherwise they can really be sometimes forgotten. Yet they are also heroes, like our grandparents, because they make us better today. And the change? It wouldn’t start without them. Their perseverance is what you need now. (Benedek Bernadett)
