The Debrecen news portal Dehir visited Attila Katona, a veteran bicycle collector and restorer from Debrecen, in the spring of this year, and found a row of very special bikes in the yard of his family home. The specialist has transformed many of them from a very poor state to near-original condition with hard work.

The Hilton Garden Inn Debrecen City Centre debuted in Debrecen, marking the opening of the first Hilton hotel in the countryside in Hungary. The hotel is located in the immediate vicinity of Kálvin Square and features the city’s first sky-bar rooftop terrace.

Following the carnival week, the 3×3 World Championships will be held again on Debrecen’s main square between 24 August and 1 September. As last year, the arena on Kossuth Square will host three events in a row, with the U18 World Championship and the men’s and women’s professional teams’ cash prize tournaments.

There comes a night every year that puts animals in the spotlight. The last Friday in August will see our 13th annual Night at the Zoo, this time offering you a taste of Central and South America’s vast biological and cultural diversity through a unique array of summer evening events and activities from 19:00 to 23:00.

For nearly sixty years, Debrecen has been hosting Hungary’s biggest birthday party, the Debrecen Flower Carnival, which is a must-see for everyone. From 15 to 20 August, almost the entire city will be in bloom and there will be a host of programs in countless venues. There will be free concerts by Irie Maffia, the Bohemian Betyars, Magna Cum Laude and the Bagossy Brothers in the main square, a botanical and craft fair, a night-time bike parade, public dance performances, exhibitions, a beer garden and light painting. For the younger ones, the Galiba Children’s Festival will provide several days of entertainment in the amusement park.

The flower floats have been prepared for some time in Debrecen to crown the Debrecen Flower Carnival, which this year is being organized with the main support of CATL. The carnival procession of Hungary’s most magnificent summer festival will be made up of more than 2,000 floats.   

From 16 to 20 August, you can once again travel on the decorated Carnival music tram on Line 1. From 17 to 20 August, there will be activities for young and old on this special service in the afternoons. Look out for tram number 516!

This year, the Debrecen Grand Prix, Hungary’s most prestigious and traditional international clay motor race, will be held for the 49th time, and we can be very proud of it, as it is unique in the world for such a traditional event! Winning the trophy is a great prestige and recognition.

The Nagyerdei Open-Air Stage will close this season with two major performances: on 22 August, Carl Orff’s monumental musical masterpiece Carmina Burana will be performed by the Szeged Contemporary Ballet, and on 29 August, Pál Szécsi’s most popular songs will be performed by Hungarian star performers.

Although summer is a time for light-hearted genres, it’s also a time for classic tunes. In August, there will be three opportunities to enjoy classical music in Debrecen, performed by great artists such as organists Ádám Tabajdi and Ágoston Tóka, singer Bea Palya, actor Imre Csuja and the Kodály Philharmonic Orchestra.

The last month of summer is one of the most exciting times in Debrecen’s life, as the city’s biggest and most popular festival, the Debrecen Flower Carnival, takes place during this time. But beyond the carnival’s week-long program of events, there’s more to experience in Debrecen. In August, you can enjoy the city’s most atmospheric outdoor festival, the Debrecen Wine and Jazz Days, exciting theatre and dance performances on the Nagyerdei Open-Air Stage, and the world-famous Turkish media artist Refik Anadol will make his debut at MODEM, following New York, Los Angeles and Las Vegas.

The Debrecen Wine and Jazz Days is Hungary’s oldest jazz festival, held every year since 1972 except 2020. This year, between 8 and 11 August, wine lovers and jazz enthusiasts are welcome to the Great Forest, where the festival is surrounded by green nature on the shores of Lake Békás during the day, while at night the view is dominated by a magical forest of lights and an enchanting water mirror.

Once again Debrecen will host one of the world’s most prestigious musical events, the Béla Bartók International Choir Competition, organized by Jeunesses Musicales Hungary and Kodály Philharmonia Debrecen!
