The Way of the Hungarian Grays

A cultural thematic route will be built in Hajdú-Bihar county, the aim of which is to present a significant and special place of contemporary animal husbandry (especially gray cattle breeding), the related pastoral lifestyle, handicrafts, trade and administration. As part of the development, traditional and interactive exhibition spaces, a study trail and a family-friendly playground will be built, among other things.

The consortium, led by the Hajdú-Bihar County Local Government received a non-refundable grant of HUF 835.21 million from the Regional and Settlement Development Operational Program for the implementation of thematic tourism developments at the local and regional level. 

The primary goal of the project TOP-1.2.1-15-HB1-2016-00020, entitled “Hungarian Gray Road – Cultural Thematic Route in Hajdú-Bihar County” is the tourism utilization of the cultural, built, natural heritage forming a tourist attraction of local and regional significance, the goal of which is to stimulate the local economy.

Within the framework of the project, a thematic tourist route and network in Hajdú-Bihar county will be created, where we will present a significant and special place of contemporary animal husbandry (especially gray cattle breeding), related pastoral life, handicrafts, trade and administration. The project will be implemented within the framework of the Széchenyi 2020 program and is expected to end in December 2021.

The objective of the project, funded by almost HUF 835 million in EU support, in cooperation with the consortium partners, in the following locations: Debrecen – Hajdúböszörmény – Hajdúnánás – Balmazujvaros – Nagyhegyes – Hortobágy – Nadudvar – Hajduszoboszlo – maintain the cultural heritage associated with the Hungarian Gray cultivation of and trade.

As a result of the development, traditional and interactive exhibition spaces will be established in existing and new buildings in several settlements, including local history collections, carts and map collections of the Shepherds, pastoral life artifacts and handicrafts. The traditional events grounds will also be renewed, and a family-friendly playground consisting of a study trail, a lookout and folk wooden toys will also be established

An important element of the project is the unified image, joint marketing, as a means of which information boards will be placed , and the development of a mobile application will be implemented.

The successful implementation of the developments can contribute to the increase in the number of tourists visiting the area, to the extension of their stay, which has a demonstrable impact on economic development.
