On 22 January, we celebrate the Day of Hungarian Culture, in memory of the fact that, according to a manuscript, Ferenc Kölcsey wrote the final text of the Hymn on 22 January 1823. This day is an annual celebration of the rich heritage, traditions, material and spiritual values of Hungarian culture.
Debrecen’s rich cultural heritage rightly elevate the city to one of the citadels of Hungarian culture. The Day of Hungarian Culture is an excellent occasion to take stock of these, from literature to fine arts, from music to street art.

Every year since 2015, the City of Debrecen and the wine and gastronomy magazine “Debrecen Borozó” have been selecting wines that are worthy of receiving the Debrecen City Wine award in 7 categories. These noble wines can proudly wear the award for a year and represent the wine culture of the Carpathian Basin in a worthy manner.

In 2025, Debrecen will continue to offer exciting experiences and diverse programs for those who want to spend their free time in a meaningful way. In addition to the regular big events such as the Campus Festival or the Debrecen Flower Carnival, there will of course be new events this year too. The Junior Figure Skating and Ice Dancing World Championships will be held on 25 February, 29 March mark the 4th Made in Debrecen Festival, and the 100-member Gypsy Orchestra is also coming on 5 April. But this is just the beginning!

Csokonai National Theatre, located at 10 Kossuth Street in a beautiful historic building constructed between 1861-65, is the oldest and largest theatre in Debrecen. Debrecen will once again host one of the world’s most prestigious sporting events, the World Junior Figure Skating and Ice Dancing Championships 2025, from 25 February to 1 March, at the impressive Főnix Arena. This will be the second time that Debrecen has hosted this special event – the last time was in 2016, when the young talents wowed the audience with their performance on ice.

One of the great sensations of Advent was the arrival of El Greco’s world-famous painting, Annunciation, in Debrecen. For those who have not yet seen the work, don’t worry, the painting will be on display in the Munkácsy Hall of the Déri Museum until 12 January 2025, as opposed to the original date.

The classical music scene in Debrecen continues unabated in January. The Kodály Philharmonic Orchestra, the Kodály Choir Debrecen and the National Philharmonic Orchestra will perform works by such great composers as Mozart, Puccini, Saint-Saëns and Bizet. In addition to classical music concerts, the SONUS percussion ensemble will evoke the carnival atmosphere on 19 January.
