From cellar to attic – Autumn Festival of Museums at MODEM

As part of the Autumn Festival of Museums, visitors are welcome to visit MODEM on 28 October.

Since 2006, the Autumn Festival of Museums has been an annual series of cultural events over an extended period. Its aim is to promote museums in a broad sense, not only to draw attention to museums, but also to keep it alive with exciting, modern, entertaining, and year-round programs.

As part of the Autumn Festival of Museums, visitors are welcome to MODEM on 28 October 2023, where they will be shown from cellar to attic how one of Hungary’s largest contemporary art centers works.

Halloween

Several events are held all over Debrecen to celebrate Halloween, one of the most popular festivals of the autumn season.

Halloween, one of the most popular festivals of the autumn season, is a tradition in Anglo-Saxon culture, but is now celebrated in many parts of the world. It’s no different in Hungary, where young and old alike dress up in scary costumes to play tricks on each other and, according to tradition, ward off the returning ghosts of the dead.

In Debrecen, there are Halloween programs in several locations around the city. We have put together a selection of these.

Theatre tours will continue in the second half of October at the newly renovated Csokonai Theater.

Theatre tours will continue in the second half of October at the newly renovated Csokonai Theater.

The behind-the-scenes tours, held several times in the afternoon, are led by the theater’s artists and take you to places of the theater that are hidden from the public and are real theatre delicacies: the dressing rooms, the stage, the set storage, the artists’ buffet, the orchestra pit and, last but not least, the several floors of the revolving stage.

A spectacular public installation evokes the memory of old fires in Debrecen.

A unique new work of art has been created in the Glass Pyramid next to the Reformed Great Church.

A unique new artwork has been created in the main square of Debrecen. The modern artwork, located in the Glass Pyramid next to the Reformed Great Church, aims to show that the human soul is rebuilt in Christ, just as the city is rebuilt from the ashes. The installation will be inaugurated on Sunday 22 October 2023 at 11 am, after the 10 am service at the Great Church.

Commemoration on the 23rd of October

Official celebration in honour of the 67th anniversary of the 1956 Revolution and War of Independence and the 34th anniversary of the proclamation of the Hungarian Republic held on 23 October.

In honour of the 67th anniversary of the 1956 Revolution and War of Independence and the 34th anniversary of the proclamation of the Hungarian Republic, the Municipality of Debrecen will organize a commemoration and wreath-laying ceremony on Monday, the 23rd of October 2023.

Church Market

Harvest is the main theme of Saturday’s Church Market, so in addition to the local producers and craftsmen’s stalls, there will also be a harvest-themed program.

The Church Market, a farmers’ market with the widest range of products in the city, opens its doors on the third Saturday of every month at 8 am in the courtyard of the Reformed Great Church Assembly Centre, 2-4 Leány Street where artisans and small producers from Debrecen and its surroundings offer their goods. Cheese, fresh bakery products, dry pasta, smoked meats, jams, syrups, coffee, chili, honey, apple cider, handicraft jewellery, utensils and toys, and many other products are sold from month to month.

Herd-in and Crane Festivals await visitors at the Hortobágy.

The two big celebrations of autumn nature in the Hortobágy are the St. Dömötör’s Day Herd-in Festival and the Crane Festival, which will be held this year on 21 October.

In the Hortobágy, following an old folk tradition, shepherds and their livestock alike prepare for winter by driving their animals from the pastures of the puszta to their winter shelter. This tradition is held every year close to St. Dömötör’s Day. This year the St. Dömötör’s Day Herd-in Festival will be held on Saturday 21 October at the Mátai Stud Farm, together with the Crane Festival.

Debrecen gets another mural painting.

The fourth spectacular mural is being painted in the city center of Debrecen. The new work depicts an old view of the city.

Recently, several murals have been painted in the city center of Debrecen. The first one was put up on the firewall of the Bethlen Gábor School of Economics in 2021: the spectacular work was commissioned by the Debrecen Vocational Training Centre and Alföldi Printing Company to mark the 460th anniversary of the founding of the local printing industry. The second is a tribute to Ákos László, the city’s iconic painter and his work, on the firewall behind Gambrinusz lane and the third is a glimpse of Magda Szabó’s Debrecen on the wall of the former Rickl House at 39 Piac Street.

Accor will strengthen its leading position in the hotel industry in Central and Eastern Europe. Thanks to an agreement with Xanga Group, one of the largest investment and development groups in Eastern Hungary, Accor will open an ibis Styles hotel in the second largest city in Hungary. The new ibis Styles will be the first hotel to be built in the immediate vicinity of Debrecen International Airport, the second busiest airport in the country.
