At the beginning of the New Year, it’s worth taking advantage of the quiet days to explore Debrecen’s cultural treasures. The temporary exhibitions in the Museum Quarter offer a colorful visual experience.

It has been a tradition for many years that the Kodály Choir of Debrecen welcomes the New Year with a church concert. This year will be no different: on 1 January 2024 they await classical music lovers at the Reformed Great Church with a New Year’s concert. The next day, on 2 January, the 100-year-old Kodály Philharmonic Orchestra will perform a diverse selection of the greatest operetta hits from the world’s musical stages. The orchestra’s New Year’s Gala Concert will be held at the Csokonai Theater.

Christmas is just a few days away. While you’re shopping for Christmas presents, it’s worth getting lost in the festive hustle and bustle and slowing down with a steaming mulled wine in hand to really get into the festive spirit. Here’s what’s happening in Debrecen on the last days before Christmas.

This year, Zoo Debrecen’s long-standing and one of the most heart-warming traditions, Christmas at the Zoo, will be celebrated on 27 December from 9:00 to 16:00 when the residents of the zoo and the enthusiastic zoo lovers come together to celebrate Christmas.

This year a 750-square-meter ice rink will be available again at the Kossuth square. Its speciality is the 120-meter corridor on which you can skate around the Kossuth monument with the amazing Reformed Great Church in the background.

The new Wizz Air flight from Debrecen to Rome, the capital of Italy, has been launched. From 13 December 2023, the flight will operate twice a week – on Wednesdays and Fridays – between the two cities.

On the first Sunday of Advent, 3 December 2023, the Advent trams were launched. The festively decorated trams are running on tram lines 1 and 2 from 3 December 2023, the first Sunday of Advent, until 6 January 2024, the Feast of the Epiphany.

Two Debrecen-based artists, Zoltán Fátyol and István Tamus, opened an exhibition of their retrospective and recent works on 16 December 2023 at 5 pm at MODEM. The exhibition entitled Border Age celebrates the 70th birthdays of the two artists by bringing together works from their mature careers.

Before the Christmas rush and the end-of-year company parties, it’s worth taking a break and pampering yourself a little to enjoy the holidays and close the year with renewed energy. The Advent Sauna Marathon at Aquaticum Sauna World is the ideal opportunity to do just that, with guaranteed fun and fantastic sauna sessions.

The last Church Fair of the year will take place on Saturday, 16 December, and will be open to all lovers of farm and handicraft products. In the spirit of Christmas, there will be a donation stall, but of course there will also be a book exchange point, slambuc and hot tea.

The only monument of Debrecen with a rich industrial history preserved in its original location, the Tanner’s House – House of Craftsmen, is expecting visitors with a two-day folk art fair and craft show on 16-17 December.

During the Advent season, the Reformed Church of Debrecen awaits all its guests with a rich musical program. The series of five concerts will be opened by young organists, followed by Advent concerts by Sol Oriens and the Tiszántúli Reformed Church District on the third Advent weekend. In the days leading up to Christmas, the Small Church Advent will close with a concert by the Lautitia Choir, who will perform for the first time in the church, and on 23 December the fourth candle of the Advent wreath of the city of Debrecen will be lit in front of the Small Church.

With the lighting of the first Advent candle, the Christmas season has officially begun. Besides the Christmas market, the festive lights and the smell of mulled wine and chimney cakes, Christmas concerts help you get in the mood for the holiday season in December. The concerts feature popular Christmas tunes performed by popular Hungarian artists and bands.
