Two Debrecen-based artists, Zoltán Fátyol and István Tamus, opened an exhibition of their retrospective and recent works on 16 December 2023 at 5 pm at MODEM. The exhibition entitled Border Age celebrates the 70th birthdays of the two artists by bringing together works from their mature careers.

Before the Christmas rush and the end-of-year company parties, it’s worth taking a break and pampering yourself a little to enjoy the holidays and close the year with renewed energy. The Advent Sauna Marathon at Aquaticum Sauna World is the ideal opportunity to do just that, with guaranteed fun and fantastic sauna sessions.

The last Church Fair of the year will take place on Saturday, 16 December, and will be open to all lovers of farm and handicraft products. In the spirit of Christmas, there will be a donation stall, but of course there will also be a book exchange point, slambuc and hot tea.

The only monument of Debrecen with a rich industrial history preserved in its original location, the Tanner’s House – House of Craftsmen, is expecting visitors with a two-day folk art fair and craft show on 16-17 December.

During the Advent season, the Reformed Church of Debrecen awaits all its guests with a rich musical program. The series of five concerts will be opened by young organists, followed by Advent concerts by Sol Oriens and the Tiszántúli Reformed Church District on the third Advent weekend. In the days leading up to Christmas, the Small Church Advent will close with a concert by the Lautitia Choir, who will perform for the first time in the church, and on 23 December the fourth candle of the Advent wreath of the city of Debrecen will be lit in front of the Small Church.

With the lighting of the first Advent candle, the Christmas season has officially begun. Besides the Christmas market, the festive lights and the smell of mulled wine and chimney cakes, Christmas concerts help you get in the mood for the holiday season in December. The concerts feature popular Christmas tunes performed by popular Hungarian artists and bands.

The first weekend in December will see the city once again full of activities. This weekend’s the Debrecen Advent program series will of course feature Santa Claus, who will arrive on a horse-drawn carriage to meet the children at the Advent Cottage on Kossuth Square, but there will also be dance performances, street theater and open-air concerts. On the first Sunday of Advent, the shepherds of Hortobágy will come to Debrecen to keep the tradition of the Pastoral Advent at the oldest church in the city, and in the afternoon, after the traditional procession of singers, there will be a joint candle-lighting in front of the Reformed Church.

As his good list also includes animals, Santa is paying Zoo Debrecen an early visit on December 2 and 3. Come meet him in his cottage from 9:00 to 10:00 and join him as he takes a tour around the zoo and treats the animals to some festive treats.

A special Advent experience awaits visitors in December at the Reformed Great Church. Visitors can admire the festive lights from the church’s 40-metre-high panoramic walkway, take a guided tour of the church and enjoy the magical sound of the church organ.

The Debrecen Advent program series opens its doors on 25 November 2023 at 9:00 am and will be open until 23 December at 7:00 pm. During the four weeks Christmas market, culinary delights, festive lights and attractions, and Christmas concerts, as well as an outdoor ice rink will await visitors in Debrecen’s city center.

On the last Saturday of November, the finest wines of Hungary will come to Debrecen again. Hungary’s biggest rural wine show, the 12th Debrecen Wine Muster, will again this year feature nearly 50 wineries to bring their finest wines to the city.

This year, the high-quality social event will take place in a new venue, the Csokonai Forum, the most modern theatre in the region and the country, providing the perfect setting for tasting great wines. During the evening, the wines – nearly 200 of them – will be opened several times, so that guests arriving later in the evening can taste the full range!

Popular melodies of the greatest figures of classical music will be performed in Debrecen’s concert halls in November by the Kodály Philharmonic Orchestra, the Kodály Choir, teachers, students, and invited artists of the University of Debrecen’s Faculty of Music. The November program includes symphonic and composer evenings, thematic concerts, and instrument demonstrations.

In the last months of 2023, the most popular representatives of the Hungarian popular music scene will come to Debrecen. Everyone will find a program to suit their taste, with concerts ranging from light jazz tunes to hip-hop and heavy metal. The line-up includes music icons like János Bródy, Kati Kovács, György Korda and Klári Balázs, popular local bands like Android and Necropsia, and acts that are currently making waves with young people like Manuel, AWS, Blahalouisiana and ByeAlex and Slepp.
