In the Hortobágy, following an old folk tradition, shepherds and their livestock alike prepare for winter by driving their animals from the pastures of the puszta to their winter shelter. This tradition is held every year close to St. Dömötör’s Day. This year the St. Dömötör’s Day Herd-in Festival will be held on Saturday 21 October at the Mátai Stud Farm, together with the Crane Festival.

Recently, several murals have been painted in the city center of Debrecen. The first one was put up on the firewall of the Bethlen Gábor School of Economics in 2021: the spectacular work was commissioned by the Debrecen Vocational Training Centre and Alföldi Printing Company to mark the 460th anniversary of the founding of the local printing industry. The second is a tribute to Ákos László, the city’s iconic painter and his work, on the firewall behind Gambrinusz lane and the third is a glimpse of Magda Szabó’s Debrecen on the wall of the former Rickl House at 39 Piac Street.

Accor, one of the world’s leading hotel management companies, is expanding its portfolio of renowned brands in Hungary, further strengthening its presence in the country’s eastern region. The group will open an ibis Styles hotel at Debrecen Airport, which will welcome its first guests in 2025.

Accor will strengthen its leading position in the hotel industry in Central and Eastern Europe. Thanks to an agreement with Xanga Group, one of the largest investment and development groups in Eastern Hungary, Accor will open an ibis Styles hotel in the second largest city in Hungary. The new ibis Styles will be the first hotel to be built in the immediate vicinity of Debrecen International Airport, the second busiest airport in the country.

Wizz Air is launching a new scheduled service from Debrecen to Rome, the capital of Italy, from 13 December. The new route will be available twice a week.

Wizz Air’s booking system already shows the flight, which will fly to Rome-Fiumicino airport (also known as Leonardo da Vinci International Airport). This airport is located 32 km southwest of Rome city center.

With the onset of autumn, the cranes have arrived in the Hortobágy. The most attractive natural event of the season is the crane migration. The crane is the symbol of the Hortobágy National Park and one of our natural treasures. From the second half of September to the beginning of November, the Hortobágy National Park Directorate organizes tours to see the daily movement of tens of thousands of cranes, which is linked to the dusk.

The Great Forest of Debrecen, Hungary’s most beautiful forest, will be presented for the fourth time between 9 and 15 October 2023, under the title of Great Forest Week, by the Great Forest Society, the Debrecen Values Committee, Future of Debrecen, and several partners.

This year’s event will include sports programs, a cycling show, a Green Cinema, a round table discussion, guided nature tours, a family day, exhibitions, and a concert.

On the 6 October, the German Cultural Days will host Jazz Night, which brings together two of the great figures of European jazz and free music and a young talent to create a unique musical experience.

The Aquaticum Sauna World has joined the “Sauna Weekend” program again this year: on the first weekend of October – 7-8 October – they will offer a special sauna program for their guests!

The “Sauna Festival” will take place in 30 spas nationwide, so that visitors can enjoy the benefits of sauna bathing at the same time.

Since 1931, World Animal Day has been celebrated every year on 4 October, the feast day of St Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals, and is a red-letter event on every animal lover’s calendar to raise awareness of the importance of the welfare and protection of all animals, both wild and in human care.

It has been a long-standing tradition for Zoo Debrecen to bring the many wonders of the living world closer to children’s groups and families with guided tours and activities on this special day. This year, in view of the Animal Week and the Big Forest Week, it is offering thematic programs for two weeks between 2 and 15 October.

Autumn renewal? When it comes to design, a little makeover is definitely not out of the question, right? It is in the spirit of this renewal that the artisans and design masters of Debrecen are entering the autumn season, now called Only Design Fair, with a new look and a new venue, but with the same stylish interior and exhibitors we are used to.

During the Covid epidemic, restrictions typically led to a surge in domestic tourism, but after the restrictions were lifted, international tourism started to recover. This year, the impetus is being given by inbound tourism rather than domestic tourism, and this European trend is also characteristic of tourism in Hungary. This year, Hungarians have chosen foreign destinations instead of domestic ones, with many spending their main holidays in neighboring countries and seaside resorts.

A new visitor route has been added to the tourist offer of the Reformed Church of Debrecen. The route was presented on World Tourism Day on 27 September, and tickets for the guided tour will be available from 1 October.

ALL-IN Debrecen and the Debrecen German Cultural Forum are looking forward to a series of events between 2 and 7 October 2023. The program includes concerts, theater performances, films, a festive gathering on the occasion of the Day of German Unity and podium discussions.

The establishment of the Korean alphabet (Hangul) is celebrated in Korea on 9 October. To mark the occasion, a full day of Korean cultural activities is organized this year in Debrecen on 7 October 2023. The event is supported by the King Segyong Institute of Debrecen and the Debrecen Summer University and organized by the Debrecen Korean Cultural Association.
