The MODEM Centre for Modern and Contemporary Art opened a new exhibition entitled Re:Re The art of re-enactment, artistic re-enactments on April 22, 2023. The exhibition aims to explore the functioning and mode of existence, anthropological, socio-cultural and (art) historical contexts of artistic re-enactments. Such performative processes, which are based on participation and cooperation, where the artist brings to the fore an event that has already taken place, or revives an event that he or she has not necessarily experienced directly but which is part of cultural memory, or perhaps re-enacts an object or artwork in a new context. In this case, the reference to the past is not merely a confirmation of history and what has happened, or even an arbitrary re-experiencing and reliving, but also a critical rediscovery of a memory and tradition that is always accessible and experienced in a different way in the here and now.

The Debrecziner Gourmet Festival will take place from 16th to 18th of June 2023.

In mid-June, the country’s finest restaurants and chefs gather in Debrecen to show where the pinnacle of gastronomy is today in Hungary. In addition to the best restaurants of Stílusos Rural Éttermiség (Stylistic Rural Restaurant Society) and Debrecen, star chefs and restaurants from Budapest will be present as guest exhibitors.

The events of the 10th Theatre Olympics in Budapest and across Hungary will feature performances by some of the world’s leading theatre artists, as well as dance, puppetry and street theatre. 

The main events of the Olympics will take place at the National Theatre in Budapest as part of the IX Madách International Theatre Meeting, MITEM.

Spring and Easter celebration events for families were announced in Debrecen’s largest year-round playground.

Debrecen’s museums, tourist attractions, recreational and cultural institutions await visitors with different opening hours during the Easter Holiday.

Zoo Debrecen celebrates its 65th birthday in 2023. The park opens its anniversary season with a five-day long event from April 6 to 10 when visitors have the chance to have a look at the new baby animals, take part on guided tours and in Easter-themed activities, and enjoy a wild day out the amusement park.

Debrecen is preparing for the Campus Festival for the fifteenth time this year. 

To mark the occasion, almost 12 years to the day after his first visit, Marcus Füreder, aka Parov Stelar, is returning to Debrecen. The pioneer of the “electroswing” style, which combines 1920’s jazz sounds with electronic music, will be coming to Campus with his band on the 21st of July, 2023.

The city of Debrecen was awarded the title of Cycling Friendly Municipality in 2010, 2016 and 2019 and became an Advanced Cycling Friendly Municipality in 2021. Its achievements in this field in 2022 have now earned it the title of Cycling Friendly Municipality once again.

The timetable of airport buses is adjusted to the departure of flights.

The timetable of the Airport 1 and Airport 2 services changed from Sunday, 26th of March 2023, to coincide with the departure of the aircraft.

The new Debrecen Extreme Sports Park will give a new impetus to the development of many sports in the city.

The construction works taking place in the Tócóvölgy, located behind Jégcsarnok (Debrecen Ice Hall) have been completed, and the new Debrecen Extreme Sports Park was inaugurated on 18th March 2023 by  Minister of State for Active Hungary Máriusz Révész and Mayor of Debrecen László Papp.

The Made in Debrecen festival was held for the first time in 2022. The aim of the festival is to showcase the talents of as many local musicians and individual performers as possible in different venues across the city. Each performer will be given 20 minutes of installation time and 20 minutes of playing time. 

The most popular tourist program of Hortobágy, the horse-and-carriage ride is available again from March 18.

The program starts at the tourist info point of the Bar Nyerges in Máta. Visitors can go on a 45-minute ride by horse carriages into the protected areas of the Hortobágy National Park to have a close look at the typical buildings and sheds of the Puszta, and the spectacular show of local horsemen.

The genre of trash art or junk art was born in the USA in the early 20th century, when the modernist view of consumer society and its related concepts were first examined. Trash art uses ordinary, everyday materials that often end up in the trash, and has become associated with raising awareness of environmental issues and social responsibility.

MODEM opened a new exhibition on February 18 entitled Close to the Soil that showcases works from Hungary’s biggest private art collection, the Antal–Lusztig Collection.

Exhibited here, in 2023, is a selection from the works in the fourth volume forming part of the book- and exhibition-series devoted to the largest private collection in Hungary. The central motif of the exhibition is the Great Hungarian Plain. The special features and characteristics of this landscape were first observed by the painters of Romanticism, who wished to present something uniquely Hungarian – something that other countries and peoples did not have – both for themselves and for the world at large.
