The Debrecen Zoo is holding its first Evening Walk on the last Friday of May 26th. 

Zoo educators and animal keepers will guide participants through the life of African species on the guided walk.

At the opening, Deputy Mayor of Debrecen Diána Széles said that there is no junior high school student in Debrecen who has not travelled on this train. Zsuzsi, Hungary’s oldest narrow-gauge railway, has been a shared value and source of experience for every child in Debrecen and every family in Debrecen for generations. It is a local asset that is known throughout the country nowadays and is known as Debrecen.

Wizz Air will launch three seasonal flights from Debrecen in the summer of 2023. Antalya in Turkey, Burgas in Bulgaria and the Greek island of Corfu will soon be available by air from the city.

This year’s event calendar is full of great events and festivals in Debrecen so it is highly advised to start planning the holidays ahead. The annual festivals like the Campus Festival and the Flower Carnival will be held again as well as the popular culinary festivals like the Debrecziner Gourmet Festival and Wine and Jazz Days. German and Chinese culture will be in the spotlight on various cultural festivals to attract members of other countries living in the city. Debrecen Drive and Galiba Children’s Festival are also in the schedule just like international sports events like the U19 Men’s Basketball World Championship and the 3X3 Basketball World Tour Masters.

Since 1906, on the initiative of Otto Herman, every year on 10th of May, we celebrate Birds and Trees Day, which aims to raise awareness of the community – originally mainly the youth – about these extremely valuable representatives of the living world and the importance of their protection.

For the first time ever, Debrecen Zoo is celebrating this green holiday with a whole week of thematic activities for children’s groups and families interested in the revival of nature from the 8th to the 14th of May.

In celebration of the 65th anniversary of their opening, Zoo Debrecen has three days of interactive events and activities between April 29 and May 1 in addition to Animals in Festive Action and Magic Wristband Passes granting unlimited access to over 20 rides.

Hot Paprika Comedy and MODEM are excited to bring English Stand-Up Comedy vol. 3 back to Debrecen! The next event will be held on April 27, Thursday at MODEM.

The MODEM Centre for Modern and Contemporary Art opened a new exhibition entitled Re:Re The art of re-enactment, artistic re-enactments on April 22, 2023. The exhibition aims to explore the functioning and mode of existence, anthropological, socio-cultural and (art) historical contexts of artistic re-enactments. Such performative processes, which are based on participation and cooperation, where the artist brings to the fore an event that has already taken place, or revives an event that he or she has not necessarily experienced directly but which is part of cultural memory, or perhaps re-enacts an object or artwork in a new context. In this case, the reference to the past is not merely a confirmation of history and what has happened, or even an arbitrary re-experiencing and reliving, but also a critical rediscovery of a memory and tradition that is always accessible and experienced in a different way in the here and now.

The Debrecziner Gourmet Festival will take place from 16th to 18th of June 2023.

In mid-June, the country’s finest restaurants and chefs gather in Debrecen to show where the pinnacle of gastronomy is today in Hungary. In addition to the best restaurants of Stílusos Rural Éttermiség (Stylistic Rural Restaurant Society) and Debrecen, star chefs and restaurants from Budapest will be present as guest exhibitors.

The events of the 10th Theatre Olympics in Budapest and across Hungary will feature performances by some of the world’s leading theatre artists, as well as dance, puppetry and street theatre. 

The main events of the Olympics will take place at the National Theatre in Budapest as part of the IX Madách International Theatre Meeting, MITEM.

Spring and Easter celebration events for families were announced in Debrecen’s largest year-round playground.
