The selfie museum in Debrecen is a really social experience. The purpose of the unusual museum is to enable visitors to take unusual photos alone or even with friends.

Debrecen has many great cycling routes right in the heart of the Debrecen city, in Great Forest, or even on the outskirts of the city. 

Lately, an almost 660 meters long cycling route on Pallagi út was completed and handed over with a season-opening Bike Festival.  Participants were able to cycle on the new bike path built in the northern part of the city. It runs from the junction of Zsigmond Móricz and Gyula Benczúr streets to the cargo port of the TEVA pharmaceutical factory.

In the Debrecen 2030 program, the local government is planning to extend the cycle path all the way to Pallag, and the construction plans have already been completed for this goal. As already announced, the indoor cycling circuit and velodrome, and the Debrecen Cycling Center will also be built there.

The Reformed College of Debrecen has been in its current location since 1538. Ever since then it has become an important part of the history of Hungarian culture. Many famous writers, poets, scholars, and public figures attended this institution.

In two cases, it was the place of turning points, key historical events that have become a legend. The College building, in its puritanical simplicity, has many interesting features. Today, on August 25th the Déri Museum is celebrating 25 years of Mihály Munkácsy’s “The Christ Trilogy” on display. 25 years ago, Mihály Munkácsy’s painting “Christ before Pilate” arrived in Debrecen for the first time, bringing the trilogy together after its restoration, taking its place next to “Golgotha” and “Ecce Homo!” in the Munkácsy Hall.

The Munkácsy exhibition opened its doors to visitors on May 25th,1930, 90 years ago in Debrecen when Frigyes Déri donated “Ecce Homo!”, the third painting of the trilogy, to the state. He only requested that it be exhibited in Debrecen.

The Hortobágy National Park was announced as a Silver Tier International Dark Sky Park in 2011 but the park was already recognized internationally as a World Heritage site (since 1973), a Ramsar site, and a Biosphere Reserve, with the addition of the IDSP award, places Hortobágy National Park in a league of its own in Hungary and more widely in Europe.

The National Park is fantastic, not only for bird watching and for the areas’ unique environment but also and consequently, for stargazing, this is partly because the area is mostly uninhabited by humans and the landscape is completely flat, unobscured by powerlines, trees or light pollution. The completely flat horizon allows for an almost complete dome of the night sky. 

The Debrecen Cultural Center building on the corner of Piac and Kossuth Street once housed the city’s oldest financial institution, the First Savings Bank of Debrecen. 

The financial institution started its operation in a small shop leased in the town hall in 1846 and later acquired the properties of the neighbouring buildings on the corner of Piac and Kossuth Street in 1868. The acquisition included the two-story “Táncos Kovács” House, the Auer House, and the Radl house.

The bank outgrew its two-story “Táncos Kovács” headquarters shortly thereafter and designed an impressive three-story palace to replace it. 

The Zsuzsi railway came to be because “the city of Debrecen wanted to cultivate its 37.4 km2 forest, which is located 24-38 km from the city near Gúth.” A Railway was needed to transport the harvested wood. Therefore the city announced a tender for the construction, operation, and supply of the harvested timberline.

The tender was won by Kopf-Steinberger contractors and the first section of the railway was opened on July 16th, 1882. This was the 21.5 km section between Debrecen-Fatelep and Nyírmártonfalva. The railway was built in a way unique to the country, with a track gauge of 950 mm.

Just like any other city, Debrecen has its own dark history with scandals, intrigues, violence, and murder which make for interesting reading. It’s a far cry from today, Debrecen is now considered one of the safest cities in Hungary, and yet the history remains.  There are several interesting buildings and streets in the city that hide some scandalous history.

Debrecen’s 2030 program is transformative, a complex and comprehensive urban planning strategy that will shape Debrecen for the next decade and far beyond. The relocation of the Natural History Museum from Budapest to Debrecen is part of this program.

László Palkovics, the Minister of Innovation and Technology announced that the government has approved the development concept of Debrecen planned for 2030, which aims to make Debrecen the center of the eastern region of Hungary.

At the end of the first World War, the peace treaty (known as “Treaty of Trianon”) was signed between Hungary and the winning countries of the Entente Alliance. As a result of the Treaty of Trianon, Hungary with a total area of 325,411 km², was fractured and fell apart. Hungary lost slightly more than 67% (including Croatia 71%) of its area and more than half of its population.

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the signing of the “Treaty of Trianon” the year 2020 was declared as “The Year of National Unity” by the Parliament of Hungary. 

A relic of history, Debrecen’s water tower, known as Nagyerdei Víztorony was built in 1913 for the purpose of supplying water to Debrecen University and the surrounding villas.  The tower was designed by architect József Boros with a capacity of a thousand cubic meters of water. 

The selected design was a more modern design at the time, showing the details of the reinforced concrete structure.  It was built by an association between mechanical engineer Dezső Adorján and construction contractor Sándor Fried Aladár of Budapest.

Located between Pallagi út and Nagyerdei Körút, the tower took the name of its surroundings, Nagyerdei Víztorony which when translated is Great Forest Water tower.

The Treaty of Trianon was signed in the Grand Trianon Palace in Versailles on June 4th, 1920 and as the result of it, not only was a significant part of Hungary was annexed but also universities and more than sixty of the museums “moved” outside the country, in an instant, together with their invaluable art treasures.

The period between June 4, 1920 and May 25, 1930 was key in the cultural life of Debrecen. It was a time when the whole country was paralyzed by the loss caused by the Treaty of Trianon.  It was during this period of cultural instability that the leadership of Debrecen decided to build an educational and a cultural institution: Tisza István University and Déri Museum. 

Frigyes Déri, ​​a manufacturer and art collector, chose Debrecen as the location of the museum presenting his collection; he donated his significant collection to the museum in 1920. His support not only covered the donation of his collection but he also allocated a significant amount for the construction.
