Coming this Week to Agora and February.

Coming This Week is a jam-packed programme of fantastical experiments and demonstrations and join the Kids clubs for February – May.

There is so much going on in Agora this week, and into February, building up to Agora’s 7th birthday, to be celebrated on Saturday 13th February, the details are to be announced shortly, so watch this space! In addition, new Agora clubs for young science fans are set to start in February.

Borderline Case Exhibition

The exhibition puts on display the works of fifteen young artists from five countries (Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, Romania), most of which were made for this occasion. The exhibition opens on opens on January 22nd at Modem

Borderline Case – Contemporary Reflections on Central and Eastern European Identity The new exhibition at the MODEM Center for Modern and Contemporary Art opens on January 22nd.

In some aspects, Borderline Case is the continuation of the 2018 art exhibition “Time of our lives?”, which reviewed the works of emerging Hungarian artists. The exhibition puts on display the works of fifteen young artists from five countries (Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, Romania), most of which were made for this occasion. The title Borderline Case was inspired by the novel by Péter Hunčík, a psychiatrist of Hungarian origin who lives in Slovakia, presenting the 20th-century history of the region through the story of the inhabitants of a small Slovak border town with a mixed population.

Two major exhibitions close in January, and one at the beginning of February, so if you’ve not seen them yet, it’s not too late, you can catch them in the coming weeks.

The Déri Museum’s temporary exhibition HATÁr-sorSOK (Borderlines) is on until 23rd January, while the MODEM Centre for Modern and Contemporary Art closes on 30th January with Parisian Abstracts. Abstraction-Création. Kandinsky, Hélion, Calder, Moholy-Nagy. Both exhibitions will close with a special closing programme on the last day.

Night of the Ice Rinks in Debrecen

The Night of Allianz Ice Rinks in Debrecen is joined by the Kossuth Square Mobile Ice Rink and the Debrecen Ice Hall. Both venues offer extended opening hours, discounted tickets, DJs, and ice disco.

The Hungarian Ice Hockey Association is organising the Night of Ice Rinks, the biggest winter sports event in Hungary, for the sixth time in 2022.

The BIDF Budapest International Documentary Film Festival – Screenings in Debrecen

Of particular note to international audiences is that as part of the festival BIDF – Budapest International Documentary Festival, screenings will be held in Debrecen at Cinema City in the Pláza. The films will be screened in the original language, with ENGLISH and HUNGARIAN subtitles.

From the 22nd to 30th January, the 8th Budapest International Documentary Film Festival (BIDF), the only international competition festival in Hungary for the world’s most prestigious documentaries without thematic or other restrictions, will be held with nearly 50 films and 200 screenings.

The Largest Windmill in Central Europe is in Debrecen!

Debrecen is home to the largest windmill in Central Europe, the Hortobágy Mill (formerly known as the Barcsay windmill). Today it is considered a cultural heritage building and is therefore listed and protected. You can visit the mill building on the corner of Hortobágy and Böszörményi streets.

A new Tourism Area – Playground + National Natural History Museum

The good news is that Debrecen’s biggest playground is currently being entirely re-developed, expanded, and renamed as ‘Blue Island’, to equal or even outdo Budapest’s best, and located right next to it will be the National Natural History Museum

Until recently, hidden behind Debrecen Zoo was Debrecen’s largest, and safest playground, however, its aging worn-out facilities were a far cry from Budapest’s City Park Playground, which if you have ever visited it, is impressive. It caused quite some playground envy for families in Debrecen. The good news is that Debrecen’s biggest playground is currently being entirely re-developed, expanded, and renamed as ‘Blue Island’, to equal or even outdo Budapest’s best, and located right next to it will be the future site of the National Natural History Museum.

The renovation of the Csokonai Theater is well underway as part of the “Modern Cities” and the “Debrecen 2030” programs. The theater will not only receive a modern stage, state-of-the-art sound, and lighting technology, and the auditorium will also have its capacity expanded as well.
