On 24th August, began the FIBA Under 18’s World Cup, taking place up until Sunday 29th August. Each day of play is filled with non-stop action over 7 hours of play, streamed live in the English language on Facebook. Today was the opening of both the women’s and men’s competitions with 16 games in total, each match taking just 10 minutes, so no breaks are required.

On the last Wednesday evening program of the summer, those interested can not only try out the unique interactive games of the experience center, but also watch special short films in the planetarium and, with good weather, look at the sky with binoculars after sunset from 9:30 p.m.
What is a fire tornado? How can we paint fire green? Can we set a shawl on fire without harm? These questions are also answered in Agora’s special experimental demonstration. The jewels of the carnival parade, the flower float compositions, can be seen by the public in the form of an exhibition this year as well, on August 20th on Nagyerdei körút, on August 21st and 22nd between and on Kossuth Square and Piac Street.
The jewels of the carnival parade, the flower float compositions, can be seen by the public in the form of an exhibition this year as well, on August 20th on Nagyerdei körút, on August 21st and 22nd between and on Kossuth Square and Piac Street. On our national holiday, August 20th, in addition to the flower floats, those interested can also see the vintage bicycles on the Nagyerdei Boulevard, which evoke the historical beginnings of the flower carnival.
The flower compositions are made with dried flowers, live flowers and the use of hundreds of thousands of dahlias from the town of Zundert in the Netherlands, as well as the work of hundreds of sculptors, and constructors. This year we can also see new compositions decorated with implantable flowers.
The theme of flower carts freely presents the mission, work and connection of the defining large companies and partners of Debrecen to the life of the city.
The beginnings of the Debrecen Flower Carnival date back to the early 1900s. In September 1900, the Debreczen Civil Cycling Association organized a national cycling competition on the association’s new track, which was attended by several nationally renowned cyclists. The highlight of the competition was a large-scale flower ceremony.
Recalling the historical antecedents of the flower carnival, on August 20th, in addition to flower carts, those interested can see vintage bicycles dressed in flower ornaments on Nagyerdei Boulevard, where private collectors Attila Katona and Ákos Szabados and the community of Debrecen Veteran Cyclists present Csepel products, Ferenc Bécs craftsman and Sándor Papp bicycles, but a special bicycle will also be visible.

On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of Pope Saint John Paul II’s visit to Debrecen, a historic event, two publications were made and a statue of the pope was erected on the staircase of St. Anne’s Cathedral.
The Diocese of Debrecen – Nyíregyháza, the Archdiocese of St. Anne located in Debrecen and the Episcopal Office of the Trans-Tisza Reformed Diocese commemorate the visit of Pope St. John Paul II with a rich three-day series of festivities lasting from 16th to 18th August 2021. Deputy Mayor István Puskás (Fidesz-KDNP) announced that there will be no carnival parade this year and that foreign performers will not perform due to COVID-19. He added that 14 companies, associations and institutions considered it important to display their flower compositions.
